Walk by William Street in Northbridge and you might miss Big Bowl. It is tucked away inconspicuously amongst other shops at the Brisbane St Chinatown end of William St.
I had been anticipating visiting Big Bowl having noticed the shop being refitted. And off course, foodie types like myself can't help discovering new places before they even open their doors. Since opening, I have peeped into the shop numerous times and seen it bustling with customers.
Weekends are a great time for catching up with family over a meal. On this particular Saturday, I lunched with my Mum at the local Chinese eatery in the suburb of Bateman. The Bateman Chinese Malaysian Eating House is set amongst a group of shops in the Bateman Commercial Centre on Parry Avenue. On weekends, this commercial centre is relatively quiet, but on stepping into "Bateman Chinese", from previous experience we have found that due to its popularity, one should aim to get there before 12pm.
It was the attraction of the leafiness and greenness of the café surrounds with its trees and plants, in an otherwise stark environment of concrete buildings that drew me to try Cafe La Tay.
Stirling St has seen an influx of apartment building construction of late. It is not really the cafe end of town, although I have noticed a smattering of cafes along the street. In future years to come and with more residents moving in, we should watch the space for more cafes.
Caffissimo in Royal St, East Perth is located on the ground floor of the new flashy looking ABC headquarters. As more companies have moved their offices to the Claisebrook Village, East Perth precinct, cafes have opened up to meet demand for services from the influx of workers.
Tarts is somewhat an institution amongst the locals of Northbridge and Highgate and has been in existence for over 10 years. It is nestled in the quieter part of Lake St near Hotel Northbridge (the old Brisbane Hotel) and is a short stroll to the lovely Hyde Park.
