North versus
South of the River
New to Perth
and looking for a property to rent or buy? What the heck does nos
or sor stand for? Locals often refer to whether you live North of
the river (nor) or South of the river (sor). That is the Swan River,
in case you were wondering.
Some factors
to consider when looking for a property include access to facilities
such as shops, schools, and transport
services. Perth Walkabout will be featuring more detailed information
on these topics in coming weeks.
If you are considering
renting or buying a property south of the river, access to public
transport such as the new Perth to Mandurah railway line which opened
in December 2007 will be a factor to consider.

The REIWA website
is a good starting point to get a feel for suburbs and their profiles.
REIWA is the key organisation in Western Australia which represents
the interests of the real industry in WA although it is not compulsory
for real estate agents to be members of REIWA. The organisation
also acts as the key industry liaison point with Government on policy
issues affecting the real estate industry.
The Australian
Property Market is another good source of online property information
for the Australian market. Tailored reports are available for individual
properties as well as information on general property market conditions.
Landgate is
the State Government body responsible for providing land and property
information on Western Australia. Landgate is a useful resource

market, residential sales, land valuations, titles information including
land titles, strata and survey plans, and mapping products.
The Real Estate
and Business Agents Supervisory Board is the State Government Body
which regulates the State's real estate industry.
For those looking
to secure a First Home Owners Grant or to determine their eligibility,
the State Government Department of Treasury and Finance is the organisation
to contact for application information and eligibility criteria.
