Fish Markets in
Perth
Kailis
Fresh
Seafood Market
46 Mews Road
Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour
Opening time: 7 days a week, from 8am
For seafood
lovers in the quest to find the freshest fish to put on the barbie
or to make that most elaborate of seafood dishes, the most popular
spot for all things fishy would have to be Fremantle.
Fremantle is
the port city of Perth, Western Australia and home to the Fishing
Boat Harbour which has always been an integral part of life in Fremantle.
Fremantle experienced
a wave of migration as far back as the 1880's when Italians from
the fishing villages of Capo d'Orlando in Sicily and Molfetta in
Apulia arrived in Fremantle. Fremantle's fishing industry has since
then been in the experienced hands of migrants from Italy and Greece.
With its never
ending coastline, produce caught off the WA coast include fish such
as snapper and barramundi, prawns, squid, oysters, crabs, Western
rock lobsters/crayfish and Fremantle's famous local sardines.
Fremantle sardines
are well known by locals and are commonly found on menus of local
pubs and cafes in Fremantle as part of modern Australian cuisine.
In January, the annual Fremantle Sardine Festival beckons food lovers
to taste tempting morsels of sardines prepared in enticing ways.
Other fishy
festivals to keep a watch out for throughout the year include the
Blessing of the Fleet held in October by the Fishing Fleet Festival
Association. The Blessing of the Fleet is an old ritual which started
life in Capo d'Orlando in Sicily and Molfetta in Apulia to protect
fishing fleets and to pray for a bountiful season of fishing.
The fish market
in Fremantle is operated by Kailis and is located along Mews Road
at the Fishing Boat Harbour. Besides its fish market, Kailis offers
good old fish and chips and a selection of other seafood dishes
at its cafe. Dining alfresco with family and friends by the waterfront
at the harbour is a popular activity especially on weekends.
Getting to the
Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is also easy by public transport
and a short walk. Catch the train to the Fremantle Train Station.
From the train station, it's about a 15 minute walk to the Boat
Harbour. Turn right and walk along Phillimore Street, then left
at Henry Street will take you to the Fremantle Esplanade. The Fishing
Boat Harbour is just across from the Fremantle Esplanade.
Can't get to
the fish markets in Fremantle and looking for an inner city location?
There is also a fish market located at 101 Oxford Street in Leederville
and run by Kailis Brothers. The fish markets are open 7 days a week
from 7am to 6pm and are conveniently located a short distance from
the Leederville Train Station.
