The John Rifici & Sons Coffee Shop (affectionately known as
Rifo's) is a local haven for residents in the surrounding areas
of Maylands and Inglewood. It is somewhat a godsend as it has provided
the Maylands strip with a decent café for weekend brekkies.
The Maylands strip has grown in fits and starts with new eateries
opening up but not lasting the mile and closing down for one reason
or another after a couple of years.
Rifo's originally started out as a liquor shop and eventually transformed
into a full scale café.
To get to Rifo's is easy. If you are a frequenter of public transport,
then catch the train along the Midland line and get off at the Maylands
station. Then from the station at the Whatley Crescent entrance,
walk straight down 8th Avenue heading towards Guildford Rd and look
out for a bright sunburnt orange building with a huge sign "Meet
me at Rifo's for coffee". You can't miss it!
On this particular public holiday morning, we took a leisurely stroll
to get to Rifo's from home. When we got there at around mid morning,
the place was so busy we could not even get a table. We decided
to go for a walk around Maylands and return later to see whether
any tables became available. Rifo's has an indoor dining area with
funky décor and a nice alfresco area. Upon our return about
20 minutes later, there was a lull in customers and we were then
able to easily find a table.
The service at Rifo's is friendly. We ordered a big breakfast for
$16 and wedges for $8. On this particular occasion, it took about
a 25 minute wait for our brekkie to arrive, which was slightly longer
compared to my previous visits. The big breakfast came out laden
with the usual suspects of scrambled eggs, bacon, chipolata, mushrooms
and toast. The big breakfast was tasty and a fairly generous serve.
The wedges were a good size serve too accompanied with sweet chilli
and sour cream.
Prices for breakfast items range up to the $16 mark. Rifo's is a
great place to visit on the weekends and anytime really. It is open
7 days a week from 7am. Specialty menu items on offer include woodfired
pizza. Meet you at Rifo's for a coffee…at the very least!
