MAHAL

On this particular weeknight, my friend and I ventured to Moti Mahal
in Beechboro. Moti Mahal has on offer Goan style Indian cuisine
to take away only.
Moti Mahal is
run by a friendly couple who are happy to explain their various
dishes on offer. The bain marie contains a selection of appetising
curries and the fridge contains a variety of pickles, sweets, and
snacks on offer.
What I like
about this place is its homestyle cooking. Whilst waiting for our
food, I was rather impressed at the selection of spices that sat
in huge canisters on the shelves that must be used to cook up this
great food. I hope so anyway and it certainly doesn't look like
they are displayed only for show!
Prices are very
reasonable. Meat curries are all $10.90 and include mango chutney
chicken, beef vindaloo, and lamb korma. Vegetable curries are $6.10
and include aloo gobi matar (potatoes, cauliflower, and green peas
in a lightly spiced tomato curry), sambhar dahl (red lentils cooked
with mixed vegetables, tamarind and spices), and aloo bhaji (potatoes
fried with onions and aromatic spices).
We decided to
order a combination 1 meat, rice and 1 vegetable for $7.35. We selected
the lamb rogan josh (diced lamb in a rich spicy curry with tomatoes
and yoghurt) and aloo bhaji (mentioned above). We also ordered a
mix of 2 vegetable curries for $6.10 and a sheek kebab roll (marinated
beef mince rolled in a paratha with coriander and mint salad) for
$3.65.
The curries
and rice were delicious and were just the right thing to warm us
up on a cold night. The sheek kebab roll, although not huge in size,
was rather tasty and had obviously been carefully marinated to perfection.
Moti Mahal is
open Tuesday to Sunday, lunch from 11.30am to 2.00pm and dinner
from 4.30pm to 8.00pm. To sample some of their special menu items,
visit Moti Mahal on a Saturday night or Sunday morning to order
their dosa (a type of Indian bread made from lentil and rice flour).
Their dosa is thoroughly recommended!
