The
Tranby House is located in a tranquil spot on the banks of the Maylands
foreshore overlooking the picturesque Swan River. It is managed
by the National Trust of Australia and is open daily except on Mondays.
Access
to the Tranby House can be easily reached by train from the city
followed by a 45 minute walk through the suburb of Maylands mainly
along Peninsula Road.
Once
at Tranby House, you can wander the grounds or take a guided tour
of the house. The entry fee for the guided tour is $5 for adults
and $12 for a family pass to view the inside of the house. As you
wander through the house, there are some interesting pieces of furniture
on display which were brought out from Hull, England on the brig
"Tranby".
The
Tranby House is one of the oldest surviving farmhouses from
early settlement of the Swan River colony. It was built by Joseph
Hardey in 1839 and provides a good example of colonial architecture.
The house was occupied by the Hardey family and originally known
as Peninsula Farm.
As
you wander the grounds, keep a look out for the majestic English
oak trees which are a century old and were transported from England
on the brig "Tranby". You will also notice large black
olive trees growing along the banks of the river. These olive trees
were grown from saplings picked up in South Africa by the Hardey
family en route their journey to Western Australia.
Feeling
hungry after a tour of Tranby House? The Tranby Tea Rooms located
on the grounds of the Tranby House offers its famous Devonshire
tea and a good selection of light snacks for morning and afternoon
tea, and lunch.
Alternatively,
the Maylands foreshore is a fantastic spot for a picnic or a barbeque.
During
summer, keep a look out for plays which are performed on the lovely
grounds of the Tranby House.
How
to get there:
Catch
the train from Perth to Maylands train stop along the Midland line.
