The Call of Swansea Street Markets

If you don't live in this neck of the woods, the Swansea Markets may be a foreign name to you. The popular Swansea Markets is the place where locals in East Victoria Park and Carlisle flock to for their local weekly shopping. With its ebb and flow of customers throughout the day, all in all it's a very busy place. The suburb of East Victoria Park is approximately 7 kms from the Perth CBD.

The Swansea Markets are well laid out and are made up of several shops including a Continental shop, a butcher, a fruit and vegetable section and a groceries section. As you enter the markets, at the front left is the butcher and on your front right is the Continental shop. The remainder of the markets are taken up by the fruit and vegetable section and the groceries section.

The fruit and vegetable section stocks an excellent range with the availability of produce dependent on seasonal factors. The dairy section with its refrigerated units within the fruit and vegetable area stocks a combination of hard cheeses, cottage cheese, fetta, ricotta, yoghurt, and marinated delicacies.

Adjoining the fruit and vegetable section is a groceries section selling an assortment of general provisions including spices, flour products, lentils, beans and grains, pasta, dried fruit and nuts, Asian groceries, coffee and tea, biscuits, jams, confectionary and fruit juices. As the suburb of Victoria Park is somewhat a multicultural pocket with its local student population and new migrants settling in from a myriad of different countries, Swansea markets is a popular place to stock up on staples. It is a popular place amongst the local African population to stock up on flour and lentil products.

The butcher at Swansea markets is always busy with offerings of different cuts of chicken, beef, lamb, pork, and a selection of frozen seafood. Need a caffeine fix or a snack? The local Continental shop has on offer fresh bread rolls and loaves, a great anti pasto selection including the usual suspects of olives, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, and Italian sliced meats. In the cabinet are also tempting treats of cakes, Italian sweet treats like cannoli and for lunch, Continental rolls made up fresh on the spot.

If you are a pensioner, discounts are available on selected days at the markets.
