Review of The Importance of Being Earnest by Black Swan State Theatre Company

Black-Swan-The-Importance-of-Being-Earnest-1-150

After spending a couple of very enjoyable hours watching Black Swan State Theatre Company's wonderful production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, you'll have to forgive me if I feel that a serious review would not be in the spirit of things. So instead, you'll have to settle for a series of off-the-cuff and extremely trivial remarks!

Isn't there an amazing difference between being told somebody is a genius and being shown why?  Wilde's script still crackles with energy and wit more than a century later.

Perth-Start-Up-Weekend-4-150

It's late Friday afternoon in Perth, and while the din of traffic quietens in the city as office workers head home for the weekend, things are just getting started at 45 St Georges Terrace. The best brains around town are gathered together at the co workspace SpaceCubed to gear up for the Perth Start up Weekend.

The Perth Start Up Weekend is one of the key events of the year where budding entrepreneurs gather together to begin the process of transforming their ideas into reality. There is a combination of excitement and a buzz of nervous energy in the air as participants mingle and chat. Some have come to contribute their development skills, some to design and others to add their marketing mojo.

Ironically, once upon a time, 45 St Georges Terrace was home to the Reserve Bank. Its vaults are one sign of its former life, and since any one of these web or app ideas at the Start Up Weekend could well be the next online success, perhaps those old vaults will come in handy after all!

The-Girl-in-the-Hard-Hat-Loretta-Hill-150

At Perth Walkabout we love to review books  by West Australian authors. The latest novel that I have read is The Girl in the Hard Hat by local Perth author Loretta Hill.

The Girl in the Hard Hat tells the story of Wendy, a safety manager who works in the harsh surrounds of Cape Lambert, up north in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. From the moment that I picked up The Girl in the Hard Hat the story caught and held my attention.

Loretta Hill tells the story of Wendy with a personal closeness so that you feel that you are with Wendy as she travels to find a new job up at Cape Lambert.

You can find the Il Cammino Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria tucked away down a side street (Raleigh Street) off Archer Street in Carlisle. It’s an unassuming older style house but don’t be deceived by its modest appearance - Il Cammino packs a punch when it comes to tasty Italian food.

On the menu are the usual favourites such as the veal parmigiana, saltimbocca alla romana, and lamb shank, along with a fantastic range of pastas and woodfired pizzas to tempt even the most discerning of diners. Seafood lovers will enjoy the chilli mussels, which is one of the house specialties.

On the Thursday night that my partner and I visited, the string of lights outside Il Cammino beckoned us inside, and we entered the restaurant in anticipation of a relaxed evening together enjoying some traditional Italian food.

Review of Xavier Toby – White Trash at the Perth Fringe Festival 2013

My partner and I headed out to the Perth Fringe Festival on Thursday night to check out Xavier Toby's comedy act, titled White Trash. With its focus on racism amongst ourselves, our family and friends, and Australia as a whole, I was interested to see how Xavier would tackle this touchy topic while still attempting to get a laugh from the audience.
